The terminal was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988 and expanded in 1991 with a second aircraft pier. In 1994, the North Terminal international departure lounge opened. Gatwick's two terminals are connected by an automated rapid track transit system.

* 17 February 1959 - a Turkish Airlines Vickers Viscount on an international charter flight crashed in heavy fog near Horley whilst approaching to land at Gatwick.
